What Is a Packing List?
A packing list is an official shipping document that shows in detail the number, weight, volume and content information of the packages in an export shipment. It is the fundamental reference source in customs inspection, buyer delivery checks and insurance processes.
Information that must be included in a packing list
- Shipper and Consignee information
- Packing list number and date (related invoice number)
- Type of goods, package/pallet count, package type
- Gross Weight — Net Weight
- Volume (Volume / m³) and package dimensions
- Marking (Marks & Numbers) information
- Total packages, total weight and total volume
- Related CMR / vehicle plate / container number
The difference between a packing list and an invoice
An invoice shows the commercial value of the goods, while a packing list shows the physical details of the packaging (packages, weight, volume). CMR System lets you produce both documents from a single hub, consistent with each other.
